Daycare Supervisor
About This Role
The Day Care Supervisor is responsible for supervising early childhood educators and support staff, coordinating daily childcare programming, and ensuring compliance with provincial childcare regulations and safety standards. The role is hands-on and operational, supporting the delivery of developmentally appropriate early learning programs while maintaining effective communication with families and internal teams.
The Day Care Supervisor provides on-site supervision and guidance to staff, supports children’s developmental needs, and ensures that daily operations meet licensing and regulatory requirements. This position reports to senior management and does not function as a centre director.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Program Oversight and Child Development
• Supervise and support the delivery of early childhood education programs that promote children’s cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development
• Monitor classroom activities to ensure safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environments
• Ensure programming meets the developmental needs of children across all age groups
• Conduct regular room observations and provide guidance and feedback to educators
• Ensure daily outdoor play and age-appropriate activities are consistently implemented
• Support children with individual needs and ensure appropriate strategies are incorporated into programming
Staff Supervision and Guidance
• Supervise early childhood educators and support staff during daily operations
• Assign duties, monitor performance, and provide ongoing coaching and support
• Adjust daily staff schedules to maintain licensing ratios and operational effectiveness
• Participate in recruitment, orientation, and training of new staff
• Conduct probationary and annual performance evaluations
• Address staffing concerns promptly and in accordance with company policies
• Approve time-off requests and coordinate coverage as required
Licensing, Compliance, and Safety
• Alberta Early Childhood Educator Level 3 Certification
• Ensure daily operations comply with the Alberta Early Learning and Child Care Act and related regulations
• Maintain readiness for licensing, health, fire, and safety inspections
• Complete and maintain required licensing documentation and records
• Ensure incident, illness, and reportable incident procedures are followed
• Monitor emergency procedures, medication storage, allergy management, and safety protocols
• Participate in fire drills and safety checks and ensure records are maintained
Parent and Family Communication
• Maintain consistent and professional communication with parents regarding children’s development and wellbeing
• Address parent concerns sensitively and in a timely manner
• Conduct enrolment tours and orientation meetings as required
• Ensure educators complete required daily journals and parent communications
• Participate in meetings with parents when developmental or behavioural concerns are identified
Administrative and Operational Responsibilities
• Ensure childcare management software records are accurate and up to date
• Oversee attendance tracking, enrolment records, scheduling, and documentation
• Support fee collection and registration processes in accordance with centre procedures
• Ensure newsletters and program communications are distributed as scheduled
• Maintain organized and current child and staff files
• Monitor supplies and resource needs and coordinate purchasing as required
• Ensure classrooms, offices, and common areas remain clean, organized, and professional
Transportation Oversight (Where Applicable)
• Oversee childcare transportation activities in accordance with Alberta Transportation regulations
• Ensure safety procedures, documentation, and sign-in/sign-out protocols are followed
• Ensure incident reporting during transportation activities is completed as required
Opening and Closing Responsibilities
• Ensure opening procedures are completed to prepare classrooms for daily operations
• Ensure closing procedures confirm all children are signed out and facilities are secured

Required Skills
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
- Physical ability to meet childcare operational demands
- Demonstrated experience supervising early childhood educators
- Strong knowledge of child development principles
Qualifications
- Alberta Early Childhood Educator Level 3 Certification
- Min 1 – 2 year Diploma in Early Chidcare Education
- Valid First Aid certification
