Construction Manager
About This Role
The Construction Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, controlling and evaluating industrial construction projects from project planning through construction, commissioning, handover and closeout.
The position will manage construction activities associated with aggregate and mineral processing plants, material handling systems, equipment installation, civil works, mechanical and electrical installation, plant modifications and related industrial infrastructure.
The Construction Manager will establish construction plans, budgets, schedules and milestones; coordinate contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and internal resources; administer construction contracts and changes; oversee procurement and site execution; monitor project costs and progress; and ensure that construction is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, contractual requirements and project objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate construction projects from start to completion in accordance with approved schedules, specifications, budgets and contractual requirements.
- Develop construction execution plans, work breakdown structures, project schedules, milestones, resource requirements, responsibility matrices and construction sequencing plans.
- Prepare construction project budgets, cost estimates, forecasts, cash-flow projections and project-control baselines, and monitor actual project performance against approved budgets.
- Plan and prepare construction schedules and milestones and continuously monitor progress against established schedules, including daily, weekly and monthly lookahead planning.
- Direct and coordinate construction activities involving civil works, earthworks, structural installation, mechanical equipment, material handling systems, electrical installation and associated plant infrastructure.
- Coordinate site readiness, contractor mobilization, construction access, permits, lifting requirements, shutdown activities, work fronts and other requirements necessary for safe and efficient construction execution.
- Prepare, review and administer construction contracts and participate in negotiating revisions, changes and additions to contractual agreements with clients, consultants, suppliers, contractors and subcontractors.
- Hire, engage, coordinate and supervise contractors, subcontractors, fabricators, suppliers and subordinate project or construction personnel.
- Establish clear scopes of work, responsibilities, construction priorities and performance expectations for contractors and subcontractors.
- Direct and coordinate the procurement of construction materials, fabricated equipment and other project requirements, including enquiries, supplier evaluations, purchase commitments, delivery schedules and invoice verification.
- Coordinate engineering and construction interfaces to ensure drawings, specifications, vendor information and technical requirements are available to support construction activities.
- Review construction drawings, specifications, fabrication information, vendor documentation and other technical information required for construction planning and execution.
- Develop and implement construction quality-control procedures and monitor work to ensure conformity with approved drawings, specifications, contractual requirements and applicable standards.
- Conduct and coordinate construction inspections, quality checks and deficiency reviews, and work with engineering personnel, contractors and suppliers to resolve technical and construction issues.
- Monitor construction costs, schedules, commitments, productivity, procurement status, fabrication progress, contractor performance and field progress and identify potential variances or delays.
- Prepare and provide construction progress reports, updated schedules, cost forecasts and other project performance information to clients and senior management.
- Conduct pre-construction, contractor coordination and progress meetings to establish project requirements, resolve constraints and maintain alignment between project participants.
- Administer construction change-management processes, including assessment of scope changes, technical deviations, contractual implications, cost impacts, schedule impacts and required corrective actions.
- Identify construction risks and constraints and implement appropriate mitigation, recovery and corrective-action plans.
- Supervise and monitor on-site construction activities to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with project schedules, specifications and quality requirements.
- Coordinate construction safety requirements with contractors, subcontractors and clients and ensure compliance with applicable occupational health and safety requirements, site procedures and client standards.
- Coordinate construction completion, commissioning support, deficiency correction, turnover documentation, handover and project closeout activities.
- Maintain effective communication with clients, engineering personnel, plant operations, maintenance teams, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, consultants, procurement personnel and senior management throughout construction.
Required Skills
- Significant construction management experience involving industrial, mining, aggregates, minerals processing, chemical, petrochemical, infrastructure or similar capital projects.
- Demonstrated experience managing construction projects involving multidisciplinary civil, structural, mechanical and electrical work.
- Strong experience in construction planning, contractor and subcontractor management, scheduling, cost control, procurement, contract administration, project controls and construction reporting.
- Demonstrated experience managing projects through construction, commissioning, start-up, handover and closeout.
- Experience coordinating equipment fabrication, suppliers, construction contractors and multidisciplinary technical teams.
- Strong knowledge of construction safety, quality control, risk management, change management and project cost and schedule controls.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, schedules, contracts and technical documentation.
- Strong organizational, leadership, communication, negotiation and problem-solving abilities.
- Experience managing construction projects in aggregate processing, mining, mineral processing or other heavy industrial environments is considered a strong asset.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in engineering, construction technology, project management or another related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of extensive industrial construction experience and education.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.
